The Genres of My Life Essay Alarm blaring, I roll over to find my phone. I’ve hit snooze about three times already; if I don’t get up now I’ll be late for class. I question what state of mind I must have been in to sign up for an 8:00 AM and two classes immediately following it. I find my phone, turn off my alarm and begin to look at what all I had missed during the whole six hours I was asleep. There’s always something; the online world never sleeps. I check everything: my messages, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and even my emails. As awful as it is, I’m always on my phone. It’s such a great way to stay in touch with people, and it makes so many different genres of communication available to me. I roll out of bed, run a brush through my hair, brush my teeth and try to put a little makeup on. I see that I have two new text messages from my boyfriend that lives in Orlando. I quickly respond to his text saying, â€Å"Good morning!!! As I walk out the door for my first class at approximately 7:48 AM, I text my close friend who is in it with me. I let her know that I’m on my way to her dorm. Then, about one hundred feet from her building I’ll text her again letting her know that I’ve arrived. As early as it is, I’ve already used one genre of communication: text messaging. This is easily the most common form of communication used by people who are not physically with each other. It is possible that a genre has sub-genres within itself. For example, my boyfriend and I being long distance, our relationship depends heavily on texting. Since we’re so comfortable texting each other, the way I text him is a lot different than how I text other people. We have very casual conversations. With him, I may abbreviate words and not worry much about my grammar or sentence structure. This is much different than how I’d text a classmate or someone else I was less familiar with. For them, I would be a lot more formal. I would be careful with the words that I choose and make sure to use proper grammar. Before sending the text I would reread it to make sure that no mistakes were made. Surprisingly, my friend and I manage to get to class a few minutes early. We find seats in the large lecture hall and sit down. I pull out my phone and, as I said I would, go through and check my social media to pass the time, as if I missed something since I last checked each of them forty-five minutes ago. I open twitter and scroll through the new tweets. I see that someone has tweeted â€Å"Why did I sign up for an 8:00 AM again? † I laugh to myself because I remember thinking the exact same thing this morning. I retweet their tweet and continue scrolling. Although twitter isn’t often thought of as a form of communication, it is a great way to connect with people. For me, it’s how I stay connected with everyone I went to high school with. You can tell by their tweets how they’re doing and what they’re up to. It’s an easy way to stay updated about people’s lives without actually having to stay in constant contact with them. Class starts, so I put away my phone and begin to take notes. However, it isn’t long until my ADD kicks in and I find it impossible to pay attention. I take my phone back out and check Instagram. I look through the pictures posted within the last twelve hours and see that there was a lot going on last night. I see that Kappa Sigma had a date function last night and my friend dressed like a jogger, another friend got thrown in the fountain for her birthday, and I see Kim Kardashian’s latest selfie. Instagram is where people post memorable pictures for their followers to see. Again, the people I follow are mostly people from high school. It’s another way to stay updated with what everyone is doing, but in the form of pictures. Class comes to an end. I pack up my stuff and head off to what will be my second class of the day. This time I open Snapchat. This app allows people to communicate using pictures and videos. Once you take it, you can choose to either add a caption or draw on your picture or video. This allows people to communicate in a fun and creative way. The app also allows everyone to have a â€Å"snapstory† where they can post these pictures and videos. The coolest thing about Snapchat is that each picture and video only stays on a person’s snapstory for twenty-four hours. After that, it erases and can no longer be seen, but until then people can watch the sna p-stories as much as they want. Snapchat is a newer form of social media and probably my favorite. It makes it possible for people to capture moments of their day and share them with all of their friends. I can see pictures that people post from parties or I can literally watch a video of my friend getting thrown in the Westcott fountain because it was her birthday. About the same time that I’ve run out of snap-stories to watch, it is time for my next class to begin. I find this class more interesting than my last, so I manage to keep my phone away for most of it. It isn’t until the break in between this class and my next that I pull it out again. Now I go on Facebook. Facebook was one of the original forms of social media. Facebook was more popular for my age group back when I was in middle school, but it is still widely used today. I scroll through my feed and see tons of status updates, shared articles and pictures posted by practically everyone I’ve ever known. I don’t do much posting on this website but I do enjoy seeing what old friends are up to by looking through their most recent pictures. Unlike Instagram, people post multiple pictures at a time. And unlike Snapchat, the pictures and videos do not get taken down after twenty-four hours. For me, Facebook is the way I stay in touch with family for the most part. I love seeing videos of my little cousin Annabelle as she grows each month, hearing about the snowfall from my family up North and seeing status updates from my cousin and her husband who are living in Turkey for two years while they teach students English and travel around Europe during their time off. After the shooting at the Strozier Library, I immediately posted a status that let all of my family and friends know that I was safe after the tragic incident. Facebook is a genre that makes communicating with a large number of people extremely easy. With time still left to spare, I realize that I’ve run out of social media sites to check. I then see that I have thirteen new emails. I open them and see ten emails from various stores and websites. I also see an email from my Statistics professor letting us know that class has been cancelled for the following day, an email from my dad asking for the information on the apartment I plan on living in next year and an email from my dentist reminding me of my appointment coming up later in the week. Although I rarely use this form of communication, it is a good way to get in touch with my parents while they’re at work. It is an even better way to communicate with my professors, other than face-to-face interaction. Like text messaging, there are different sub-genres of emailing. If I am emailing my father about something while he is at work, I will make it short and simply state the question that I must ask him. As I step out of the classroom, I get a phone call from my mom. She’s on her lunch break and just wanted to check in. We talk about how my classes are going and how I’m doing money wise. She also catches me up on things that are going on at home: my little sister just made the varsity softball team as a freshman and my other sister just got her first job. Like texting and emails, the way I talk to my mom is completely different than how I talk on the phone with my boyfriend. And even that is completely different than how I’d talk to someone I wasn’t close with, like an employer. With my boyfriend, our phone conversations are very casual. I’ll call him periodically throughout the day to ask him something or just to check in if I’m lonely or bored. Our conversations are very scattered. A lot of times I interrupt him because I think of something that I’d been meaning to ask him for a while. If I were to do that to my mother she would drive up to Tallahassee just to yell at me. The way I would talk to an employer is also a lot different than my phone conversations with both my mom and my boyfriend. With an employer, I would figure out what I was going to say before I call. I might even write it down. I would be extremely cordial and polite. Before hanging up I would thank them for their time and possibly answering a question I had asked. And I most definitely would not end the call with â€Å"I love you. † As I hang up the phone with my mom, I think about my day. Animal Farm in England Today animals celebrate an heroic victory against the odds. They were never expected to be able to outsmart and out muscle the men. Earlier reports had indicated that the farm’s previous owner, Mr Jones, had been forced out of the farm one night after he forgot to feed his animals. To regain ownership of the farm Jones and his fellow neighbours have planned to attack the farm. The catalyst was apparently the claim that Jones and his men had heard rumours that the animals from the farm were bleating â€Å"The only good human being is a dead one†. Reports suggest that Jones was expecting to catch the animals off guard but the animals had other ideas. According to the animals all the men were armed with sticks except for Jones, who had a gun. As the men approached, the animals prepared to go into battle. Once the men were close enough to pose a threat, the animals first line of defence was to attack. Although the men easily fended off the geese and the pigeons this was apparently part of the animals plan to lure the men into thinking the animals would be an easy beat. The animals then launched their second attack which included Snowball their leader, the sheep and the goats. Once again the men were too powerful with their weapons and the animals were forced to retreat back into their yard. Whilst the animals retreated the men started celebrating their efforts, but what they didn’t realise, was that the animals still had further plans up their sleeves. As the men forced the animals further into their yard the three horses, the three cows and the rest of the pigs appeared from the cowshed. The men suddenly found themselves cut off. The animals led by Snowball then charged at the men from all angles creating havoc. First Snowball took down Jones and then blind panic reigned as the other men desperately tried to find a way to escape the yard. According to human sources all the men who were forced to accept defeat escaped, apart from a young stable-lad who was stomped on and reportedly accidentally killed by a horse known as Boxer. It iss said that Snowball had been studying an old Julius Caesar novel, which documented Caesar’s previous campaigns. Undoubtedly this was pivotal to the animal’s success. A funeral was held at Animal Farm for the single sheep which Jones had killed with his gun. During the funeral Snowball emphasized the fact that all the animals had to be ready to die for Animal Farm if need be. The battle has unofficially been named ‘The Battle Of The Cowshed’, as this was where the fight was based. Native American Music Essay Native American music has many different musical styles. Within every Native American tribe there is a variety of musical styles and instruments. In response to the research that I have conducted, there are three main musical styles that are going to be my point of focus. The Sioux Grass Dance, the Zuni Lullaby, and the Iroquois Quiver Dance are the principal methods which contribute to Native American music. The Sioux Grass Dance is considered to be the most popular style of Native American Music. As one dances to this music, they follow a pattern known as toe-heel. This consists of the individual placing the left foot in front of the right and repeating with the other foot. Each male dancer makes many personal variations of this dance resulting in a solo display. The costume is an elaborate style that correlates with the vocal approach of music. Bells are tied around the legs of the dancers for an added effect. The Zuni Lullaby illustrates a contrast with Plains singing to assist in confirming that there is not an individual style to Native American music. Through the Native American styles of music, repetition becomes a prominent feature. This is not because the Native Americans cant find words to fit into the music, but because repetitions with slight variations are often too insignificannot for outside listeners to notice. In the Iroquois Quiver Dance the first thing to strike the ear is what is often known as a call and response form. One singer announces a phrase of lexical text, known as the call, the other singer answers him in a vocal pattern. This continues throughout the song. In illustrating many of the musical styles among Native American music, this has another name known as the Warriors Stomp Dance. The voices in the Iroquois Quiver Dance are relatively relaxed compared with that of the Plains singing. Instruments used to portray these various styles of music were often drums of all shapes and sizes, rattles, and often tambourines or bells with other percussion instruments. The drums were constructed by using such materials as clay, iron, wood or aluminum with heads of buckskin, chamois, or rubber. These drums were typically played with a single drumstick, holding a steady pattern of four beats. Also, in addition to these instruments there were wind instruments. The most common was the vertical flute, whistle, and occasionally panpipes. The flute was most often used to express a love song and never for religious ceremonies. Looking at Native American music, one can conclude that there are three main types of music: The Sioux Grass Dance, Iroquois Quiver Dance, and the Zuni Lullaby. Drums and wind instruments are used in portraying the music. The Native Americans dressed accordingly to the music that they dance to. All of these features add to what we have become acquainted with, Native American music.

Living in a foreign country can be an experience both exhilarating and daunting. A t the same time, it would be new challenge and memorable days, these will not be ordinary days. People who live away from their countries usually face some effect, and this essay aims to mention the three most common effects of living in a foreign country that can change people’s personal lives. One of the consequences of living abroad, is the difficult time one has to undergo by being far from his family and hometown. Living away from your family sometimes makes you feel homesick. Especially, when you face up some issues which you are unable to resolve and you have nobody to support you . That would make you realize how valuable your family is. The second main effect is acquiring the culture and traditions of foreign societies. Living abroad would allow you to wander in values and habits which are totally different of yours. On The Morning of Christ’s Nativity: An Application of The Bible to the Work of John Milton

Milton's Nativity Ode contains a â€Å"theory of all things† in respect to his vision. This theory deals greatly with the idea that the human body is merely a tomb for the soul. While in the Bible we have been taking the body of the King to represent the whole land. The death of the King is in comparison the death of the land. Like the Kings of Christ's time, Milton writes to bring attention to the three types of liberty he hoped to achieve in England: Liberty from the Church [tyranny of the bishops], liberty of the individual [divorce and education], and liberty from the state [King]. The poem can be broken down into four parts: the first eight verses deal with the coming of Christ, the next ten with the mystery of music, verse nineteen and forward focus on the silencing of the oracles and concludes with verse twenty-seven and the birth of Christ. In â€Å"On the Morning of Christ's Nativity† Milton sees both Christmas and Easter as the same thing since it is impossible to have one without the other. The baby in the cradle is the man on the cross. John Milton's â€Å"On The Morning of Christ's Nativity† uses the idea of the Jesus of history and the Christ of fact to relay his ideas of the creation of the world and the synonymous events. Comparison can be drawn between John Gospel and â€Å"On the Morning of Christ's Nativity† for it is an intensely symbolic book. John's version of Christ is a Christ of Faith, which has a plays a large part in the Ode. In the fifth verse of the â€Å"Nativity Ode† Milton declares that the saviour would come and sacrifice himself for mankind and work with his father to create â€Å"perpetual peace† (7]. In the glorification of Jesus in John's Gospel, the spirit makes him known as the Son of God. In the first hymn of the poem Christ is compared to nature and the natural world. For Milton, harmony can only be found in nature; nature has a deeper meaning then is initially revealed to the reader. Snow is able to cover the earth and blanket all of its sins. Nature takes the form of trees and rivers in the Old Testament; the Trees of Knowledge and Life as well as the Rivers of Eden [Pison, Gihon, Hiddekel, and Euphrates]. As in comparison, in relation to the serpent, Milton uses the dragon to signify everything that is evil in the world. In classical mythology the dragon signifies the same as the serpent that tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden: The old dragon underground In straiter limits bound, Not half so far casts his usurped sway, And wroth to see his kingdom fail. [168-171] The Classics give you a limited and partial image of the truth. Milton uses classical mythology to prove that even in a pagan religion snakes are equated with evil doings. The slaying of the dragon is connected to every dragon slaying known to Milton from both the Biblical and Classical worlds. Milton recounts the story of how as an infant Hercules strangled two snakes: Not Typhon huge ending in snaky twine: Our babe to show his Godhead true, Can in his swaddling bands control the damned crew. [226-228]. Classical mythology, or the belief in it cannot save your soul but it can give you a nudge in the right direction. While in the poem Christ is replacing the classical culture he is also part of classical antiquity. At the closing of the poem we return to the musical serenade of the angels and the angel harmony as the angels sin in order serviceably. St. Paul like Milton believed that the body was merely a tomb for the soul: a container that while it was fallen could through acts of salvation help the soul return to a state of grace after death. Death as we see it is not really death then by the standards of Milton; death only wounds the physical body and allows the soul/spirit to return to the heavens. With death comes liberty, from the church, self and state. To St. Paul the body of mankind was an ever perishing home to an eternal soul. This is a recurrent theme in the narrative of the Bible, a story of loss and recuperation. Milton's â€Å"On the Morning of Christ's Nativity† calls on many images and ideas that are expressed in the Old and New Testament's of the King James Bible from the idea that the King is the land, the body is a vessel for the soul and that the snake/serpent and dragon are all representative of evil whether examining Biblical or Classical literature. Milton uses Biblical allusion and references to give his argument weight with his reader who would have surely at that time been familiar enough with the middles to draw the comparisons quickly and effectively. The Sorrows of Young Werther - Essay Example Werther finds Lotte to be the object of his hopeless desire, but social conventions of a world based on reason keep her just out of his reach. His unrequited passion for Lotte ultimately destroys him as his frustrated melancholy drowns every other aspect of his personality. Werther too can be defined by one key trait: his inner sensitivity. His sensitivity enables him to be acutely aware of his emotions and the beauty around, which makes him attractive to others. Sensations can be intensified to such an extent that he is often entranced to a blissful state. The introduction, as written by the fictional editor, establishes Werther as worthy of admiration: "You cannot withhold your admiration and love for his character, any more than your tears for his fate... take comfort in his suffering" (Introduction, l. 3-6). However, the same trait cultivates Werther's flaws: self-absorbed, egotistic, and hypersensitivity. Werther, has little internal struggle and is usually forthright about his emotions. Werther's defining trait also acts as the central cause of his actions: "my heart, which is the fountainhead of all-all strength, happiness and misery my heart alone is my own." (p. 97) Werther often complains about the hardships of living, and yet he proclaims: "We human beings often complain that there are so few good days and so many bad ones; but I think we are generally wrong. If our hearts were always open to enjoy the good, which God gives us every day, then we should also have enough strength to bear the evil" (p. 38). As The Sorrows of Young Werther's end approaches, Werther is in a deep depression and is allowed to fall deeper in love despite recognized consequences: "Dear God! Am I culpable that I even now feel a supreme happiness in again living through those glowing moments of joy in all their intensity Lotte! Lotte! - And this is the end!" (p. 135). Suicide is an unnatural act, fundamentally contradicting the central action of life: living. Death renders beings ultimately desensitized, the complete opposite of Werther's trait. Concluding, the story is not just about a young man who is obsessed with a young woman and kills himself because he cannot have her. The main theme is more about passion which completely drives the story. Werther is passionate about practically anything. He clearly values nature, youthfulness, society and the love for Lotte. He is totally dominated by his hopeless passion for all things in life. From the beginning of the story, Werther takes particular pleasure in nature. He tells William "I feel content herethe abundance of this youthful season gives warmth to a heartevery tree, every hedgerow is a bouquet" (p. 24).
